Designed around your home

A considered choice.
A better everyday.

Hung windows offer a familiar vertical layout that suits many traditional and contemporary homes. A single-hung window has one moving sash; a double-hung design allows both sashes to move. The best choice depends on reach, ventilation, cleaning access and the proportions of the opening.

GreenOn Homes helps homeowners across the GTA and selected Southern Ontario communities plan replacements that fit the house and daily routine. Bring the room’s layout into the conversation, especially where furniture or an upper-storey location changes how the window will be used.

Decide which sashes you need to operate

A single-hung window can be a straightforward choice when opening the lower sash meets your needs. A double-hung window offers more flexibility in where you create an opening. Compare the effort needed to lift each sash and reach the lock at the proposed installation height.

Neither name tells you the exact clear opening or cleaning method. Ask to see the quoted model in operation. If the window serves a room with special opening requirements, the actual dimensions and configuration need to be checked rather than inferred from the style.

Match the proportions to your home

A vertical sash layout can complement tall openings and existing façade rhythms. The meeting rail divides the view, so compare its height with nearby windows and your indoor sightline. Grilles and exterior colour can reinforce a traditional look or keep the frame more understated.

Because the sash moves within the frame, a hung window can be considered where an outward-opening unit would interfere with a path. Still, review screen arrangements and safe access, and consider how curtains or blinds will sit around the operating parts.

Ask for a cleaning demonstration

Some configurations include tilt-in cleaning features, but availability and the correct release procedure vary. Have the supplier demonstrate how each sash is supported and returned to its operating position. An upstairs cleaning plan should be based on that actual mechanism.

Keep tracks and drainage paths clear and use the recommended care products. If a sash will not stay where it is placed or becomes hard to move, have the balance and alignment assessed. Do not improvise props or force the mechanism.

Compare installation scope and glass together

The existing frame condition helps determine whether a retrofit or fuller replacement is appropriate. Include interior casing, exterior finishing and any frame repairs in the discussion. A quote is more useful when it identifies which existing components remain.

Compare the offered glass package, energy rating, hardware and screen rather than using the number of moving sashes as a quality measure. Ask for a written configuration and warranty information, then check operation with the installer before the work is signed off.

Common questions

What is the difference between single and double hung?

A single-hung window has one moving sash, typically the lower one. Both sashes move in a double-hung arrangement. Cleaning features and available sizes depend on the selected product.

Can I clean both sides from indoors?

Some models offer tilt-in or other cleaning arrangements. Confirm the exact feature and safe procedure for each sash; it should not be assumed from the term “double hung”.

Are hung windows a good replacement for older wood windows?

They can preserve a familiar vertical appearance, but frame proportions, trim and the condition of the existing opening should be assessed. Compare the finished sightlines as well as operation.
