Designed around your home

A considered choice.
A better everyday.

A small opening can make a room feel noticeably more usable. An awning window is hinged at the top and opens outward from the bottom, giving you ventilation without a tall sliding sash. It is worth considering above a kitchen counter, in a bathroom or alongside a larger fixed window.

GreenOn Homes helps homeowners in Vaughan and selected Southern Ontario communities choose replacement windows around the room, the opening and everyday use. Start with how much fresh air you need, where you can reach the handle and what sits outside the wall.

Where awning windows work best

Think about the whole opening, not just the window on its own. A wide, shallow awning unit can bring ventilation to a space where a taller window would interrupt cabinetry or privacy. In a living room, an opening section beneath a picture window can separate the job of providing a view from the job of providing air.

The sash projects outside when open. Measure clearance to a walkway, deck railing, neighbouring wall or planting bed before choosing its size. The outward-opening shape may shelter the opening in light rain, but wind-driven rain can still enter; close it during bad weather.

Choose privacy and comfort together

For a bathroom, compare clear and obscured glass samples in realistic light. Privacy glass changes the view through the window, while the opening height and nearby sightlines also matter. For a kitchen, consider whether a screen, handle or blind would interfere with reaching and operating the sash.

Double- and triple-pane choices should be compared as complete window configurations. Ask for the selected model’s energy rating and glazing details rather than assuming that every unit with the same pane count performs identically.

Plan the replacement around the existing frame

A sound existing frame may allow a retrofit approach. Deterioration, water damage or a need to change the opening can make a fuller replacement more appropriate. The assessment should also cover the sill, exterior finish, interior trim and how the new unit will connect to the surrounding wall.

When comparing awning window installation quotes, check the opening size, glazing, colour, screen, hardware and finish work line by line. A low headline price is difficult to compare if one proposal includes replacement trim and another leaves it for later.

Make everyday operation part of the decision

Try the handle and locking action before settling on a configuration. Check that the crank folds or clears your planned blinds, and ask how the screen is removed for cleaning. A window that works well in a display can feel different when installed above a deep counter.

Keep the sill and drainage paths clear and follow the supplied care instructions for the operating hardware. Report a new change in closing resistance instead of forcing the handle; alignment, an obstruction or worn hardware may need attention.

Common questions

Can an awning window stay open when it rains?

The open sash can offer some shelter in light rain, but it is not a weatherproof canopy. Wind direction and exposure matter. Close the window during heavy rain or strong wind.

Can I combine an awning and picture window?

Yes, a combination can provide a large fixed view and a separate opening section. The final arrangement depends on the opening, support requirements and available product configurations.

What affects the price of replacement awning windows?

Size, glass package, exterior colour, hardware and installation scope all affect the quote. Frame repairs and new interior or exterior finishing should be identified separately.
