A considered choice.
A better everyday.
Sliding windows move horizontally within their frame, making them a practical option where an outward-swinging sash would get in the way. They can suit a wide opening beside a deck, walkway or compact outdoor space, while keeping the look of the window simple.
GreenOn Homes helps GTA and Southern Ontario homeowners compare slider configurations around ventilation, cleaning and installation needs. A useful quote identifies exactly which sections move and how the finished window will work in your room.
Single slider or double slider?
In a single-slider arrangement, one sash moves and the other remains fixed. A double slider has two moving sections. Compare where the opening will be, how you reach each latch and whether the arrangement works with furniture and screens.
Neither layout opens the entire glass area at once. If maximum open space matters, discuss the clear opening of the actual unit and compare other styles. Looking at a sample is useful: a photograph alone may not make the moving and fixed sections obvious.
Keep outside paths clear
A slider stays within its frame during normal operation, which can be helpful next to a narrow side yard or frequently used patio. Inside, the horizontal meeting rail and frame proportions affect the view. Compare the visible glass area and sightlines with your existing window.
For a window above furniture or a counter, consider how far sideways you need to reach to open and lock it. A style that looks convenient at floor level may be awkward at the installation height. Use those measurements when discussing the layout.
Look beyond the pane count
Ask for the energy rating and glass package of the slider being quoted. Frame design, seals, dimensions and glazing all contribute to performance. Compare double- and triple-pane options alongside the complete specification, including any differences in hardware or sash weight.
An installation assessment should also examine the existing frame and the connection to the wall. A new window does not by itself resolve water entry originating elsewhere. Explain where and when you notice drafts, staining or moisture so those concerns can be investigated.
Check cleaning access before ordering
Slider cleaning arrangements vary. Ask whether sashes lift out, tilt or use another method, and have that demonstrated for the model you choose. Do not assume a sash can be removed safely just because a different window in the house works that way.
Keep tracks and drainage openings free of debris using the manufacturer’s care instructions. At handover, check that the sash moves smoothly and locks without excessive force. The written quote should make clear whether screens, interior trim and exterior finishing are included.

Common questions
Do sliding windows project onto a walkway?
Their sashes move within the frame during normal opening, so they avoid the outward swing of a casement or awning. Confirm any other projections and required clearances for the installation.
Does a double slider open twice as wide?
Not necessarily. Two moving sashes give more flexibility about which side opens, but the actual clear opening depends on the unit’s design and dimensions.
Why is my existing slider hard to move?
Debris, worn components, alignment or frame problems can affect operation. Have the condition assessed before deciding whether an adjustment, repair or full replacement is appropriate.
