A considered choice.
A better everyday.
Casement windows open outward on side hinges, typically using a crank. They suit homeowners who want a clear view when closed and an opening sash that is easy to operate without lifting. The right choice depends on the opening, the room and the space outside the wall.
For a kitchen, bedroom or living room upgrade, GreenOn Homes helps you compare custom replacement casement windows and the work required to install them. Our Concord address makes Vaughan and the GTA a natural starting point, with service in selected Southern Ontario communities.
Choose the hinge side before you choose the colour
Opening direction determines how the sash sits outside and which side of the room provides the easiest access to the crank. Look at nearby walls, railings, shrubs and walking routes. Two adjacent casements can be arranged differently depending on the view and how you want to use the opening.
A casement above a sink can be convenient because you turn a handle rather than lift a sash. Still, test the reach across your counter and the space needed by the handle. Screens and blinds should be considered at the same time as the operating hardware.
Casement, slider or fixed window?
Choose a casement when outward clearance is available and a side-hinged opening suits the room. A slider can be useful beside a deck or walkway because its sash moves within the frame. A picture window is a different choice: it is fixed, so it needs another source of ventilation.
Do not decide on efficiency from the opening style alone. Compare the complete unit’s documented performance, size and glass package. A combination of fixed and opening sections may give you the view you want without making every panel operable.
A good fit includes the wall around it
During an assessment, explain whether the issue is a draft, difficult operation, damaged trim or moisture between the panes. Those symptoms can point to different scopes of work. Replacing the whole frame, installing within an existing sound frame or addressing another issue are not interchangeable proposals.
The quote should show the selected dimensions, installation approach and finish work. Ask what happens if concealed frame damage is discovered. Agreeing on the approval process for additional work before installation makes the project easier to manage.
Specify the details you will use every day
Ask about the locking points, screen removal and hardware care for the actual model offered. For an upper-storey opening, discuss safe access for cleaning rather than assuming every casement can be cleaned fully from indoors. Available cleaning positions vary by configuration.
When the work is complete, operate each window with the installer. Check the latch, crank and screen, and keep the product and warranty information with your quote. Report unusual resistance rather than forcing the sash or using the crank as a lever.

Common questions
Are casement windows suitable for bedrooms?
They can be, but a bedroom opening may have additional requirements. Confirm the proposed unit’s clear opening and applicable requirements with the installer and local authority where needed.
Can casement windows use triple-pane glass?
Ask for the available configuration and its complete-unit rating. The frame, hardware and opening size need to suit the selected glass package; pane count alone is not a specification.
Can I replace a slider with a casement?
Often the existing opening can be assessed for another style. Exterior clearance, frame condition, opening dimensions and any required changes must be checked before ordering.
