Basement Windows

Plan basement window replacement with GreenOn Homes. Assess daylight, ventilation, window wells, moisture concerns and the scope of your Ontario project.

Designed around your home

A considered choice.
A better everyday.

A basement window has to work with conditions above and below ground level. Opening height, exterior grade, a window well and the room’s intended use all affect the choice. Start by identifying whether you want better daylight, easier operation or a change to the space.

GreenOn Homes can assess replacement basement windows in selected GTA and Southern Ontario communities. Tell us early if the room will be used as a bedroom or if you want to enlarge the opening; those projects need a different discussion from a like-for-like replacement.

Look at the outside before choosing a window

Photograph the opening from inside and outside, including the surrounding ground and any window well. Note where snow, leaves or rainwater collect. A window can be in good condition while drainage or grading around it still needs attention.

Explain any history of water entry and when it occurs. Replacing a window should not be presented as a cure for every basement moisture problem. The assessment needs to distinguish the window assembly from drainage, foundation and wall conditions that may require separate work.

Basement bedroom plans need an opening assessment

A basement bedroom may require a qualifying emergency escape opening, and the window well and access outside can be part of that assessment. Do not choose a unit solely from the words “basement window” or “egress” in a catalogue.

Ask the appropriate local authority and installer to confirm requirements for your intended use and project. Opening enlargement can involve structural work, permits and other trades. Have those responsibilities and the required design work identified before ordering a window.

Balance usable glass with ventilation

A small opening can feel quite different depending on the frame proportions and sash layout. Compare the visible glass, the clear opening and the way the hardware is reached from inside. Where outside space is restricted, opening direction deserves particular attention.

Privacy may be important when the glass is close to a sidewalk or driveway. Discuss obscured glass alongside the need for daylight and an outside view. The glass package should be selected for the whole unit, and operating parts should remain accessible after the room is finished.

Make the quote specific about surrounding work

A replacement quote should distinguish the window from masonry changes, window-well work, drainage, interior returns and exterior finishing. Ask what is included, what requires another contractor and how unexpected damage will be handled.

After installation, keep access to the window and its operating hardware clear. Ask for a demonstration of opening, locking and screen removal. Retain the model details and any approvals with the project paperwork so future room changes are based on the actual installation.

Common questions

Is every basement window an egress window?

No. Suitability depends on the actual clear opening, operation, outside conditions and applicable requirements. Confirm the proposed configuration for the room’s intended use.

Will a new window stop basement flooding?

Not necessarily. Water can enter because of drainage, grading, foundation or other wall issues. Those causes need to be assessed separately from the condition of the window.

Can the existing basement opening be made larger?

It may be possible, but the structure, exterior conditions and required approvals need assessment. The quote should clearly identify design, cutting, supporting and finishing work.
