A considered choice.
A better everyday.
The exterior finish connects a new window to the architecture around it. Frame colour, trim width and the depth of the opening all change how a façade reads from the street. A black window can be a strong accent, while a lighter finish can keep attention on the brickwork.
At GreenOn Homes, we help you consider the whole elevation before ordering replacement windows. Bring a photograph of the front of your home as well as close-up views of the openings, so proportions and practical installation details can be discussed together.
Choose a palette for the whole exterior
Start with the elements that will remain: brick, stone, roof, soffits and the main entry. Compare physical colour samples outdoors in daylight and shade. A colour that looks neutral on a screen may appear warmer or darker against your masonry.
If you are changing doors or garage doors later, decide whether the finishes should match or complement each other. Record the manufacturer’s colour name and finish in the order rather than relying on a general description such as “black.”
Balance the frame, brickmould and surrounding trim
The visible frame and trim affect the apparent glass area. A broad surround can make a statement on one house but overwhelm narrow openings on another. Review front elevations and repeated window groups together to keep a consistent rhythm.
Discuss how the new frame will meet existing masonry, siding or stucco. The proposed brickmould, sill and capping details should be explained before you approve the look, especially where old trim will be removed or concealed.
Treat water management as part of the finish
Exterior finishing must work with the installation’s drainage and weather protection. A neat bead of sealant is only one detail; the condition of the opening and the interfaces around it also matter.
Capping should not be used to hide unresolved deterioration. Ask how damaged material discovered during removal will be documented, priced and repaired, and which surrounding finishes are included in the original scope.
Confirm finish care before changing colour later
Factory finishes and field-applied paints are not interchangeable. Before repainting a frame, check the product’s approved coatings, colour limitations and warranty conditions. Dark colours can change how surfaces absorb heat.
For your quote, list exterior colour, trim profile, capping finish and removal requirements for each elevation. Retain the finish information after installation so future cleaning, touch-ups or additional windows can be planned consistently.

Common questions
Can I choose black outside and a lighter interior?
Different interior and exterior finishes may be available depending on the window system. Confirm the exact combination, exposed edges and available samples before ordering.
Does new capping repair rotten wood?
No. Deteriorated material needs to be assessed and addressed appropriately. Capping is a finish detail, not a substitute for repairing an unsound opening.
Should window and door colours match exactly?
They can match or form a coordinated palette. Compare actual samples together because similar colour names across different materials may not produce the same appearance.
