Picture Windows

Plan custom picture windows for clear views and daylight. Compare fixed glass, opening combinations and installation for your Ontario home.

Designed around your home

A considered choice.
A better everyday.

A picture window is fixed glass designed to frame a view. It does not open, which makes ventilation planning part of the decision from the start. In the right place, a large fixed unit can simplify the sightline and give a room a stronger connection to the outdoors.

GreenOn Homes helps homeowners in the GTA and selected Southern Ontario communities assess picture window replacement and combinations with opening windows. Start with the view you want from inside, then work through glass, proportions and installation access.

Design around the view from the room

Stand where you normally sit or work and consider the height of the sill, the visible frame and any divisions in the glass. A window that looks large from the street may not frame the best view from your sofa. Nearby furniture, radiators and wall finishes can also influence the layout.

For multiple windows on one elevation, compare the frame lines together. A fixed centre panel with opening side sections is one way to balance the view and ventilation. The appropriate dimensions depend on the available configuration and the building opening.

Manage daylight and afternoon sun

More glass changes the amount and direction of light entering the room. Explain when the space feels too bright, too warm or uncomfortable near the existing window. Orientation, tree cover, overhangs and neighbouring buildings all provide useful context for selecting glass and shading.

Compare the complete window’s ratings and the chosen glazing specification. Low-E and other glass options are not interchangeable across every exposure. Ask how the proposed selection balances your room’s comfort goals with the view and light you want to keep.

Keep opening needs in the plan

A fixed window cannot provide a breeze or function as an opening when one is required. Identify where ventilation will come from before replacing an operating unit with fixed glass. For a bedroom or another space with special requirements, have the proposed arrangement checked.

If you want fresh air without dividing the main view too much, compare an awning section below or casements beside the fixed panel. Their handles, screens and outward clearances should be reviewed as part of one assembly.

Large glass needs a complete installation quote

Access, lifting and the condition of the existing opening can affect installation scope. A larger replacement is not just a bigger version of a small window. Ask how the room, exterior surfaces and landscaping will be protected while the old unit is removed and the new one fitted.

Confirm the frame finish, interior trim, exterior detailing and any proposed opening changes in writing. Discuss safe exterior cleaning access as well, since a fixed sash does not tilt or swing inward for cleaning.

Common questions

Can a picture window open?

No. A picture window is fixed. If you want ventilation, consider a combination with an operating style or another suitable opening in the room.

Can I replace several windows with one large pane?

A change to the arrangement or structural opening needs assessment. Support, available product dimensions, glass requirements and any necessary approvals must be considered before ordering.

Is the largest possible window always the best choice?

Not necessarily. The view, glare, room comfort, ventilation and cleaning access all matter. Compare the proposed window from the places where you actually use the room.
